Condolensces to Betterton Friend and Neighbor

The B-Blogger has just learned of the passing of Brian Distefano's father this past weekend.  Needless to say Brian is and continues to be a great friend and neighbor to all of us in the Jewel and now its time to be there for him.  Click onto the blog title to see his Dad's obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer and send Brian and his family your good thoughts and wishes as a comment below.

Weiner Roast

Clearly these are not Betterton residents nor does the Jewel have any elected members of Town Council who are parading their anatomy through the internet via email, tweets or Facebook.  However, the recent stories on Representative Weiner should serve as a note of caution to all, that what you say, do and or post should always be considered as front page headlines whether the Washington Post, New York Times or Kent County News.  So beware what you write.  The biggest caution is for those who do not or rarely use the internet as a form of communication, you may think you are protected but when truth be told, your comments, pictures and or beliefs can indeed go viral through organizations and or friends with whom you speak, write and or support.  Hand written notes, checks, and even home videos can easily be put out for the world to see without any advance notice.  One recommended precaution that can be taken is to simply "Google" your name at least once a quarter and see what comes up, you might be very surprised!  If you know a B-town resident who doesn't use a computer or have access to the internet, you should offer to "Google" them if they agree.  Remember a local traffic ticket can easily be found on the internet.  If you do own a computer don't forget to purchase security software to minimize the chance that someone can access all your information and that of your friends.

Speaking of weiner roasts , the B-blogger has learned that this summer is once again slated for many gatherings and festivities, not the least of which will include Betterton Day and the annual Betterton Fig Fest.  However, only 3 individuals have responded to the B-blogger's inquiry as to whom will be having floats on Betterton Day.  With all the artists, craftsmen/women and other talented folk, we need to bring back the parade of floats or get them from the outside.

The B-blogger knows that some of our followers have been sleeping a bit and not been offering any comments to the posts below, so now is the time to hop back in the saddle and offer up your thoughts, ideas and gossip.  Don't forget this coming Wednesday for the Town Hall on the Waste Water Treatment Plant and its new beginnings.  What's up with lawn recycling?  I thought it was happening twice a month but many residents, including the B-Blogger placed their compostables appropriately, yet they are still sitting there.

Let the Festivities Begin - An Amaziing Week in B-Town

Dogs on Easter Day

Bailee is Back!

Welcome Family and Neighbors

A Seat at Easter Table

Neighbors and Friends

Pizza Anyone?

It has been an amazing week for the Jewel!  To begin, Easter celebrations were begun with a welcoming dinner sponsored by the amazing Wendy Coslett as she opened her doors and dining table to family and many neighbors. A feast of lamb on the grill accompanied by perfectly grilled asparagus just added to the celebration. Of course, then we had Bin Laden whose demise we all owe to the amazing men and women of our armed forces, especially the Navy Seals. But even more important, at least for the Jewel, was the return of Councilman Zellers after his multi-bypass surgery. Along with Ed of course is "Bailee"  who is more than happy to be back! Speaking of neighbors, Judy Kohl surprised the Zellers with a heart healthy home cooked meal as they settled back into their home.  Judy you have a heart of gold and the energy of the sun.

Will and Karen Working Hard

Get there early!
The blogger was amazed when he learned from our Town Crier, Thomas H., that Marzella's was about to open on Easter weekend.  While the B-Blogger and his partner have yet to sample the food, reports from neighbors are overwhelmingly favorably.  Pat and Mike B. state its perfect for company and the grand kids, you must try the Hoagie.  JoAnn Hollidge boasts that the burgers are the best in the County and don't forget to get the fries.  So the B-Blogger wants your opinion, so please make a post!   While some of us were eating the B-Blogger got to watch some real work as Karen and Will R. renewed their boat with elbow grease, paint and wax.  Clearly this ship will take on the Queen Mary, anytime.  Speaking of Queens, did you watch the Royal Wedding? Longtime resident and now friend Millie Massey reports she woke at 4 AM and to her surprise was glued to the TV with her mom of 90.  Millie's daughter Jackie lives in London and assured her Mom and Grandma had all the necessary accouterments.  But what is up with Kate's brother, have you seen the video? Do you think we should invite him to Betterton Day?

There is a lot more coming this summer.  Clean out your home and garage and bring it to the Betterton Firehouse for the Community Flea Market on the 24th of May.  It is also not too late to start on a Betterton Day float, perhaps we can follow on the lead of First Friday and invite the KCHS artists to design one of their own?  The B- Blogger wants to know what is on your mind?

Councilman Zellers On the Road to Recovery

B-Blogger just got this update from Joan on Ed's path to health.

Ed's open heart surgery went well yesterday. He is currently in the ICU at Lancaster General Hospital and doing well. He will stay in the ICU today and then be moved to the cardiac step down unit where the "drill sergeants" will start him on his way to recovery. The plan is for him to be discharged to Lisa's (daughter) home Tuesday or Wednesday where he will stay until his follow up visit with the surgeon and cardiologist. We are anticipating 14-18 days and then we will be going home to continue his recovery and start rehab.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers. It is very comforting to know so many people are surrounding us with love and prayers.

Joan

Talk About Political Spin

The B-blogger just received a legislative update from our Maryland State Delegate Michael D. Smigel.  He is very proud of being elected to head the Maryland House of Delegates' Tea Party Caucus.  However, what caught my eye was his proud sponsorship of House Bill 9 " which would allow law abiding citizens from Maryland's contiguous  states to carry their concealed weapons in our state if they have a vaild permit from their home State." But here is the "spin": "By not recognizing permits from other states we are losing revenue from tourism and shopping because citizens are unwilling to travel here without their concealed weapons for protection."  Can you believe this statement?  Is Maryland a dangerous state?  Do you really think that people aren't shopping at Peoples because they can't carry their concealed weapon?  I may not be the brightest bulb in the Jewel but I can think of a lot of other ways we can boost tourism and shopping in Maryland.

If building State revenue from tourism and shopping is truly a goal of our delegate, than why didn't he step up to the plate and co-sponsor the bill to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.  Massachusetts, New York, Iowa and other states are taking in millions from weddings and tourism since they passed this law.

The B-blogger would love to hear your comments as a post-below. Just for the record the B-blogger is not against hunting, in fact I believe it is a necessity to control populations of deer and other wild animals that are multiplying at phenomenal rates and or spreading disease such as Lyme, Rabies, Leptospirosis to name a few.  So what say you Bettertonians?

Oh! Don't forget this coming Monday is not only the start of Passover but the day you must file your tax returns.

Say a Prayer for a Speedy Recovery

With Easter and Passover soon upon us, there will be much focus on family, friends, food and prayer.  Tonight the B- Blogger is asking fellow neighbors, friends and B-Town residents to say a prayer for Councilman Zellers who will undergo cardiac bypass surgery tomorrow morning, Friday April 15th.  Councilman Zellers has been an active and beneficial member of our City Council always bringing rational thought to the table and always having an ear to anyone who wishes to offer thoughts, complaints, and most importantly ideas for improvement.  He is a man of courage, devotion and just a really nice guy, a true friend to us all.  So now its our turn to return the support with prayers for a rapid recovery with minimal pain.  Ed we are here for you and Joan and can't wait to see you back on the scooter and walking Bailee.

I encourage all of our readers to post their best wishes below.

Issues and Activities - Betterton in Bloom

As the Red Buds begin to bloom and the tulips sprout across the yards, many activities are planned. However, before we get to the fun, the B-blogger would like to know how you feel with the latest of decisions made by our Town Council and Mayor. According to the Kent County News, Mayor and Council have decided to leave the Cross atop of the entrance to our community center. The B-blogger has to applaud Councilman Zellers for being the sole member to vote against this decision. The Blogger believes in our great nation and the principle of separation of Church and State. It would seem to me that this decision is a violation of this principle, especially since the community center is the home to our town's legislative body and to the principle that our community center is open to all who wish to partake in its activities.

The Cross of the Precious Blood Catholic Church is indeed part of the Jewel's history and should be placed within our planned historical museum section of the Betterton Community Center but not atop the entrance-way. So what is your opinion?

On a more festive note mark your calendars for May 21st and June 26th as our summer fun begins. On May 21st between 10 AM and 3 PM the American Legion Post will host an "Olde Betterton Post Card Show." For more information contact Larry Crew at 410-348-9144. The B-blogger has his own collection and can't wait to see the plethora of cards I'm missing. Who knows perhaps your home will be front and center on one of these historic memories.

As the heat of summer builds, June 26th will be the perfect time for an "Olde Fashion Ice Cream Social" to be held at the Bettterton Community Center from noon to 3 PM. Personally, I'm a fan of vanilla bean but what is your favorite flavor? Remember this event is a perfect setting to invite friends and relatives to visit the Jewel. It's great for kids as well as Uncle Harry and Aunt Sally as they won't be able to comment about their likes and dislikes in your home as you can have them filling their faces with great ice cream in a totally neutral setting.

It's time to arose your Qi and move that stagnant energy, so please post your thoughts below and let our Summer begin!
