Betterton - The Community of Choice for HCP's?

As Mayor Sorge recently commented : "Betterton is a destination" but the real question is if Betterton is becoming the community of choice for health care providers (HCP) to live and enjoy life? Let's take a look at some of these life savers who give their time and efforts to keeping us healthy and administering to us when ill or hurt. We have nurse Christine Turner, respiratory therapist Joan Zellers, Drs., Mel and Mark and our most recent addition Dr. Keri Jacobs. Perhaps the BCDC could create a welcome basket for Dr. Jacobs? I encourage all the Jewel readers to wave hello if nothing else to Dr. J if you see her looking out at the Bay from the condos on Bayview. By the way, the B- Blogger has recently learned that Dr. Mel is celebrating his 40th this week, so perhaps a congrats on the firehouse display board would be a welcomed surprise. Speaking of our Betterton Volunteer Firemen and Emergency Response Team, they too are part of the HCP community. The B-Blogger encourages our readers to post comments on an HCP that you would like to recognize or one that the B-Blogger has missed. Let me not forget Dr. Joe Stock who worked diligently to secure a huge grant to support purchase and planting of trees in our community.

Speaking of health, keeping active and engaged mentally is a critical factor in maintaining your health. I would ask any of our readers who know of activities in Betterton and or Kent County that need support to post this information below.

In closing this post please put your hands together for Councilmen Bob Pyfer and Ed Zellers for rolling up their sleeves to personally power wash the Bayside foot bridge. It is almost a perfect white and ready to proudly display our holiday wreaths within the next few months. Physical exercise and community commitment, what a way to stay healthy! Thanks to you both.

  1. Don't forget to include Dr. Malcolm, DMV, who is just as important as he takes care of our best friends.

  2. Oops, I meant DVM. Sorry Dr. Malcolm

  3. hello to all the health care providers.
Would you all be interested in giving your names to a group I am trying to start. This group will look after the elderly and I am hoping if they are in need that we consider the neighbor ideal of a gesture to ensure that they are healthy and able to be looked after as the cold weather creeps up on us.

  4. Well, Anonymous who is asking for help with the elderly could identify herself it's so clear who she is if anyone was at the Town meeting on Tuesday.

And don't forget to add that Councilman Sutton was part of that VOLUNTEER GOODWILL cleaning team on the bridge. That means that NO taxpayers' money was spent cleaning a critical part of the town's infrastructure. Just folks doing a good thing. Where are all those complainers out there? Not volunteering with effort and time to better Betterton, that's for sure.

Dr. Mel is 40? God love him; He must be counting backwards like so many of the stalwart volunteers in Betterton. We is all getting old, folks. Where are the younger volunteers? Turned off by the nit pickers? Probably. Sorry to be so negative, but I'm sick of it and signing off and finally out. I'm done!

  5. registered voter,

Where or when was this bridge-washing project publicized ahead of time? If only the Mayor, Council, and BCDC clique are aware of what's being done, of course they will be the only ones who show up to help...and therefore, reap all the kudos so you can self-righteously scold the rest of us on this blog. People like you are what's wrong with this town.

    Just sign me, once again,

  6. Ano, you do not have to be a HCPer to check in and make sure the elderly and warm and comfortable this winter. I admire the efforts although I think if you came forward, widened your scope of caregivers and cultivated your community network you could be successful based on your efforts.

  7. I apologize for not leaving my name. It is Maggie Patterson and I am looking to start a volunteer group that will help in this cause.

I really did not leave my name because of the negative effects my name seems to bring out on this blog.

I would sincerely like to get some folks together to begin and organizing so that when we are trapped in our homes we have some great volunteers to check in on the elderly as well as see if just in general they need some help.

  10. Good Job Registered Voter pointing out that the only ones that reap rewards are those that are aware of what is going on and shame on all of us that we did not take mind reading 101.
It is always comforting that we can be scolded by those who weren't there either obviously by the kudos only being given to two.
Just think it really only takes 2 to powerwash a bridge, one to hold the machine and one to turn it on any more than that it would be a comedy of errors.
I think the two of them should go to the park and start cleaning that up as well then we will really be able to see the fruits of their labor, the foot bridge is only seen by those special kinds of folks that live over on bayside heck they could have paid to have someone do it for them since the bayside folks hold all the money for the betterton clique society.

  11. just so you know there is a new website that is available for anyone to post announcements or sign up to do some real community concious efforts for our citizens. And yes I agree it does not take just Hcp to help but it sure would be nice to have an expert be there for questions.
    The new site is http://bogorsmall.blogspot.com/

  12. I posted this on the new site but felt this needed to be said here as well so here goes:
    Good Morning Folks,
I was just on the Jewel of the Chesapeake and realized I had not gotten an area set up to start our group of volunteers so if you would like to become a member please respond with your name and contact information.

I was informed by someone that you don't have to be a health care provider and that is a good point but also know that having some health care provider is a back up if there is a question and I would hope that if they are called upon they will give their expert opinion of any health issue that may arise.

It is known in my opinion as the neighborly thing to do. It is like the late Dr. Kaufman from Rock Hall who had his community in his top list of priorities. I can remember moving here from Wilmington with a very sick child. My husband was still working in Wilmington and not knowing anyone I went to Dr. Kaufman and he treated my child at not cost and the drug store actually let me charge her medicine.
I paid the bill for the medicine but I will always be in debted to Dr.Kaufman and his wife for the care they took in realizing that the town's people are what made him who he was and he gave back to the community.
This would be the theme i would hope that we all share in our town.

  13. Maggie, you have a blog. If people care to hear you they will tune in. If they don't care they won't. It is pretty simple stuff.

  14. Doctors who live and vacation in Betterton have been many more things in the community than some of us know: planting trees and getting grants for more plantings, volunteer on committees for new new Town Center, beach and public garden cleaners, volunteers for the Sassafrass River Association, volunteers for Sultana and it's projects including the John Smith Trail and then very often the ones who offer Professional advice about neighbors ailments and woes within the medical maze. As your medical neighbors find more time in their schedules from less committment to jobs, the opportunities to develop a 'medical panel' of sorts may arise. I did not know Dr, Kaufman, but am sure he was fully retired which known of the local docs are yet. And I support the earlier blogers observation, that senior and ailing neighbors don't necessarily need the neighbor with the MD after his name to check in on him or her and provide the type of care and monitoring that's needed. As we have chosen to make this an important destination in our lives we will always want to work to maintain a happy and healthy community on many levels. Don't fret we are here.

  15. Thank You Duke well said. Unfortuately Dr Kauffman and his wife are both now deceased but they were great folks with great ideas.
And thank you also for all that you do regarding the grants and the trees and everything else that you do, you are definately the kinds of folks this town are proud to have as neighbors.

    have a great day

  16. To anonymous Oct 16. If the park needs attention, I think it would be great if you would inform Mayor and Council of the problem and then volunteer to organize a group to clean it up. Also, speaking of volunteering, the BCDC has a meeting scheduled for Oct 21st at 7 oclock at the town hall (the meetings are always the 3rd Thursday of the month so you can mark your calendar). Volunteers are needed by the BCDC to promote and improve our town. Another volunteer project for you could be the small structure in front of the new Town Hall/Community Center. It needs repaired, scraped and painted. So, if you would like to help with that project please call the town office to volunteer. Lots to do, so lets stop criticizing and start working together.

  17. From this part-timer’s perspective, the outreach by the Town via email and now the website is a welcomed source of information. With these advances and the inception of the BB’s blog, I almost feel I can see the Bay while away. Maybe someday soon we will have an actual webcam view of the Bay on one of the home pages. Thanks to all involved for these new portals into our community!!
